Only have three days in Uganda? Don't worry. You do not need to have two weeks to get a taste of Uganda's wild side, because Uganda is one of a few countries where you can spend three incredible days on a safari. With the right itinerary, three days can take you from the busy streets of Kampala to quiet national parks, open savannahs, forests and lakes where you can watch wildlife in its natural surroundings.
The important thing is not to try to see everything in three days. Uganda is bigger than it looks, and spending your whole safari driving from one place to another can leave you feeling like you saw more roads than wildlife. Instead, choose a destination that matches what you really want to experience.
Maybe you want to see lions and elephants. Perhaps you would rather spend your time looking for chimpanzees in the forest. Or maybe your dream is to finally stand in front of a mountain gorilla.
Here are some of the best 3-day safari itineraries in Uganda.
If you are looking for a classic Uganda wildlife safari, Queen Elizabeth National Park is one of the best choices. The park is located in Western Uganda, is Uganda's 2nd largest park, and is home to elephants, buffaloes, Uganda kobs, hippos, lions and many other animals. You can also add a boat cruise on the Kazinga Channel, which is one of the highlights of visiting the park.
Day 1: Kampala or Entebbe to Queen Elizabeth National Park
Start early from Kampala or Entebbe and head west. The journey takes you through Uganda's countryside, with plenty to see along the way. Depending on your arrival time, you can have an evening game drive before heading to your lodge. After a long day on the road, dinner and an early night are usually welcome because the next morning starts early.
Day 2: Morning Game Drive and Kazinga Channel Cruise
Wake up early and head out for a morning game drive. This is one of the best times to be in the park because the temperatures are cooler and many animals are active. You might come across elephants crossing the road, buffaloes grazing, Uganda kobs moving across the grassland and, if you are lucky, lions resting or hunting.
After lunch, take a boat cruise on the Kazinga Channel. From the boat, you can see large numbers of hippos in the water, crocodiles along the banks, and elephants and buffaloes coming down to drink. It is a completely different way of experiencing the park.
Day 3: Kikorongo Equator & Return to Kampala
Enjoy a final breakfast before starting your journey back to Kampala or Entebbe. You can make a stop at the Equator.
Who is this itinerary good for? It is ideal for first-time visitors who want to experience Uganda's wildlife without spending too many days travelling between destinations.
This park is Uganda's biggest national park, located in North Western Uganda and famous for the world's strongest waterfall and the big five animals.
Day 1: Kampala to Murchison Falls National Park
Leave Kampala early and travel north towards the park. Depending on your route and arrival time, you can visit the top of Murchison Falls before heading to your accommodation. Standing above the falls and watching the Nile force its way through the narrow gorge is quite a sight. You then check into your lodge and relax after the journey.
Day 2: Game Drive and Nile Boat Cruise
Start your morning with a game drive. The park is home to elephants, giraffes, buffaloes, Uganda kobs, lions and many other species. Later in the day, take a boat cruise along the Victoria Nile towards the bottom of Murchison Falls. You will see hippos and crocodiles in and around the water, while birds are everywhere along the riverbanks.
Day 3: Final Game Drive and Return
Have breakfast and enjoy a final game drive before leaving the park. Then begin the journey back to Kampala or Entebbe.
Want a short safari without travelling too far from Kampala? Lake Mburo National Park is a good option. It is located in Western Uganda, in Mbarara, and is also known as the "whispers of the wild," famous for its impalas and zebras. It is particularly convenient for travellers with limited time and offers a different landscape from some of Uganda's larger parks.
Day 1: Kampala to Lake Mburo
Leave Kampala in the morning and travel towards western Uganda. You can make a stop at the Equator for photographs before continuing to the park. After arriving, enjoy an afternoon or evening game drive. Look out for zebras, impalas, Uganda kobs, buffaloes, warthogs and other wildlife.
Day 2: Game Drive and Boat Cruise
Start with a morning game drive while the weather is still cool. Later, enjoy a boat cruise on Lake Mburo. The lake gives you a chance to see hippos, crocodiles and a variety of birds from a different perspective.
Day 3: Morning Activity and Return to Kampala
Enjoy another short game drive or other activity before beginning your journey back to Kampala.
Why choose Lake Mburo for a three-day safari? The biggest advantage is the shorter travel time compared with some of Uganda's more distant parks. It is a good choice if you want a quick wildlife escape without spending too much of your three days travelling.
Not everyone travels to Uganda mainly for lions and elephants. If chimpanzees are high on your list, Kibale National Park should be on your travel list. Kibale is located in Fort Portal and is also referred to as the "primate capital of the world," famous for its primates and its beautiful tropical forest.
Day 1: Transfer from Kampala to Kibale
Travel west towards Fort Portal and Kibale National Park. The scenery becomes greener as you get closer to the forest. Depending on your arrival time, you can relax at your accommodation or explore some of the surrounding attractions.
Day 2: Chimpanzee Tracking
This is the main day of the trip. After breakfast, head to the briefing point at the Uganda Wildlife Authority head office before entering the forest for chimpanzee tracking. You walk through the forest with experienced guides, listening for chimpanzee calls and looking up into the trees for movement. Once a chimpanzee family is found, you will get an extra hour observing how they eat, communicate and play.
Day 3: Kibale to Kampala
After breakfast, begin your journey back to Kampala or Entebbe.
Is chimpanzee tracking a difficult activity? It can involve walking for several hours through forest terrain, so a reasonable level of fitness is helpful. The exact duration depends on where the chimpanzees are found on the day of your trek.
Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, also known as the "ultimate gorilla experience," is one of Uganda's ancient forests, home to half of the world's mountain gorillas (an endangered species), with four gorilla trekking sectors: Buhoma, Ruhija, Rushaga and Nkuringo. The park is located in south western Uganda.
Day 1: Travel from Kampala to Bwindi
You will depart from Kampala or Entebbe early and travel towards southwestern Uganda. The scenery changes as you move towards the hills and forests around Bwindi. Arrive at your lodge, have dinner and prepare for the following day's trek.
Day 2: Gorilla Trekking and Batwa Cultural Experience
After breakfast, you will head to the Uganda Wildlife Authority headquarters for briefing. Then you enter the forest with experienced guides and trackers. The trekking can take 2-6 hours depending on where the gorilla families are found. Once found, you will be given an extra hour to be in their environment and observe how they eat, communicate and play.
Day 3: Bwindi to Kampala or Entebbe
After breakfast, begin your journey back. If you have additional time, the trip can be extended to include other activities or destinations.
How much does gorilla trekking cost in Uganda? The gorilla trekking permit is a major part of the cost of a Uganda gorilla safari. Uganda's standard gorilla trekking permit currently costs USD 800 per person for foreign non-residents. The final price of a three-day gorilla safari will also depend on accommodation, transport, meals, the number of travellers and other activities included.
That really depends on what you want to see. There is no single "best" safari for everyone. The best itinerary is the one that matches your interests, budget and available time.
Can I really do a safari in Uganda in only three days? Yes. Three days is enough for a good safari, especially if you choose one main destination rather than trying to visit several parks.
How much does a 3-day Uganda safari cost? There is no fixed price for the safari, but the cost depends on the destination, accommodation, number of travellers, transport and activities. A budget safari will cost less than a mid-range or luxury safari. Sharing the safari with other travellers can also reduce the cost.
What animals can I see on a 3-day Uganda safari? Depending on the destination, you may see elephants, lions, buffaloes, Uganda kobs, hippos, crocodiles, warthogs, antelopes, giraffes and many bird species. If you choose Kibale, you can track chimpanzees, while Bwindi offers mountain gorilla trekking.
What is the best time for a 3-day safari in Uganda? Uganda can be visited throughout the year. Many travellers prefer the drier periods because roads and trekking conditions can be easier, but the wetter months also offer green scenery and fewer tourists.
Can I combine two national parks in three days? It is possible, but it depends on the parks. Combining destinations that are close to each other can work. Trying to combine parks that are far apart may not be possible.
Can I do a 3-day gorilla safari? Yes, a three-day gorilla trip can work, especially if you are travelling specifically for the trek. However, you should allow enough time for the long journey to and from Bwindi.
What should I pack for a 3-day Uganda safari? Bring comfortable clothes, comfortable walking shoes, a hat, sunscreen, insect repellent, sunglasses, a light jacket, personal toiletries and a camera. For gorilla or chimpanzee trekking, sturdy hiking shoes, long trousers and a waterproof jacket are useful.
Can I start my safari from Entebbe Airport? Yes. Your safari can be arranged to start from Entebbe Airport or Kampala, depending on your arrival and travel plans.
Can I customise a 3-day safari? Absolutely. You can choose the destination, accommodation level, activities and travel dates. If you have a particular animal or experience you want to see, tell your safari planner before the itinerary is prepared.
Three days may sound short, but Uganda has a way of making those days count. You can leave the city in the morning and, before long, find yourself surrounded by open grasslands, forests, lakes and wildlife.
The important thing is not to try to fit the whole of Uganda into three days. Choose what matters most to you, give yourself enough time to enjoy it, and let the journey become part of the experience.
